The best homecoming plan leaves room for the people you came back to see. Handle the ticket, parking and bag check before you get to the Bluff—then spend your Saturday reconnecting.
Southern University hosts Arkansas–Pine Bluff on Saturday, October 3, 2026, at 6 p.m. Central at A.W. Mumford Stadium in Baton Rouge. Southern Athletics identifies the game as Homecoming and Columbia Blue Day. That is the confirmed anchor for your weekend, whether you are returning with classmates, meeting your chapter or bringing family for their first visit. Official football schedule.
Which homecoming dates should you use?
Southern’s homecoming hub advertises September 26–October 3. Its September 24 news announcement is titled “Southern University celebrates Homecoming activities: Sept. 27–Oct. 3.” These official pages use different starting dates. We are keeping that distinction visible instead of treating one range as a fully verified daily program.
For visitors planning the closing weekend, the concrete anchors are:
- Friday, October 2: the Southern University Alumni Federation lists its Homecoming Day Party from 11 a.m.–5 p.m. on the university grounds. Check the official alumni listing for admission, exact on-campus location and participation requirements before attending.
- Saturday, October 3: Southern vs. UAPB, 6 p.m. Central, A.W. Mumford Stadium. Columbia Blue Day is the athletics-listed theme.
Do not confuse the September 26 football date with a Baton Rouge home game: Southern’s schedule lists Jackson State away in Jackson, Mississippi, that day. We have not independently confirmed a complete daily homecoming itinerary, parade route, stadium gate-opening time or every associated event’s admission rules. Recheck the university hub before departure.
Tickets: get everyone ready before the drive
Start with Southern Athletics’ linked Ticketmaster ticket page. Select the October 3 matchup and review the seat, total price and terms before purchase. We are not quoting a starting ticket price because availability and fees can change.
Southern’s mobile-ticket guide says to download tickets to your phone wallet before arrival. If your group is entering separately, transfer individual tickets in advance and have each recipient accept the transfer. A screenshot is not a substitute for the proper mobile ticket. Guests without smartphones should contact the ticket office for arrangements; game-day account assistance requires matching identification.
Our planning advice: put one person in charge of the itinerary, but do not leave that person holding everyone’s only way into the stadium. Send a single group message with the date, meetup point and official ticket link, and ask each attendee to confirm that their ticket is accessible.
Mumford Stadium: the setting matters
A.W. Mumford Stadium sits on Southern’s Baton Rouge campus and is named for Arnett W. “Ace” Mumford. The university lists a capacity of 25,500 and an opening date of 1938. The archive aerial photograph in this guide shows the stadium and its riverside campus setting; it is not a photograph of the 2026 homecoming crowd.
For Divine Nine alumni groups, the practical takeaway is simple: use specific meeting landmarks and times, not just “we’ll find you on campus.” Leave enough margin for friends arriving from different hotels, different parking areas and different reunion events.

Parking and getting to campus
Southern’s published 2026 game-day parking plan lists general parking at $30 per vehicle, cashless, opening at 6 a.m. General spaces are limited; the plan directs general-parking traffic toward Mills Avenue. A game ticket and a parking arrangement are separate planning items.
The same plan identifies limited-mobility parking near Bradford Hall and the Southern University Police Department, available first come, first served. Selected-area shuttles begin 2½ hours before kickoff and serve the Tony Clayton Championship Plaza area. Verify the current map and arrangements rather than assuming every lot has a shuttle or that a space is guaranteed. Reserved and RV customers should read the displayed-pass and reentry restrictions carefully.
For a car-free visit, Visit Baton Rouge’s transportation page links the Capital Area Transit System, rideshare services and private transportation, as well as Baton Rouge Metropolitan Airport information. It does not establish a dedicated homecoming shuttle. Check actual routes, operating hours and accessible-vehicle availability for your trip.
Our advice: agree on the return trip before kickoff. A rideshare estimate is not a pickup guarantee, and a familiar weekday shortcut may not work around game-day traffic controls. Follow officers and posted campus directions.
What to bring—and what to leave behind
Southern’s clear-bag policy allows a clear plastic, vinyl or PVC bag no larger than 12 × 6 × 12 inches, or a one-gallon clear storage bag. Medically necessary items are subject to inspection.
The stadium rules specify a small clutch limit of 4.5 × 6.5 inches. Backpacks—including clear backpacks—umbrellas and strollers are prohibited. Plan for rain with a poncho instead. Reentry requires another unused ticket; children ages three and older need tickets.
Pack for the day you will actually have: charged phone, weather-appropriate clothing, essential medication and a compliant bag. Before buying an accessory for the weekend, measure it. “Clear” alone does not establish that it meets the rules.
Where to stay
Use the official Baton Rouge hotel directory to compare locations and then confirm terms directly with the property. We have not verified a university-wide 2026 homecoming hotel block, special rate or included campus shuttle, so none is presented here as official.
Choose your hotel around your group’s full itinerary—not merely the lowest nightly rate. Ask about parking fees, accessible-room features, late arrival, cancellation deadlines and the realistic route to Southern’s campus. If your group plans separate Friday and Saturday activities, agree on which location matters most before everyone books a different part of town.
For longer drives or flights, avoid a tightly timed departure immediately after the game. A relaxed Sunday checkout can be more useful than a Saturday night itinerary that depends on an exact final whistle.
Accessibility and unresolved details
Contact Southern Athletics at 225-771-3171 before purchasing if you need accessible seating, companion arrangements or medical-entry guidance. The stadium rules identify ADA/medical checkpoints on the east and west sides. Confirm your specific route and needs directly; this guide cannot guarantee a particular seat, parking space or accommodation.
Still to verify for your own plans: the complete university event program, separate-event registration, age restrictions, exact gate-opening time and any late traffic changes. We have not confirmed an age restriction for the alumni gathering; ask the organizer rather than assuming it is open to every age. The football ticket rule above is not an age restriction for the rest of homecoming.
Quick answers for your group chat
Is the homecoming game September 26 or October 3?
October 3. The earlier date appears in the university’s broader homecoming-week promotion; the football team is scheduled away on September 26. Use the athletics schedule for the game location and time.
Is there one pass for the whole weekend?
We have not verified one. Treat the football game, parking and separately organized gatherings as distinct items unless an official purchase page explicitly bundles them.
Can I show up with a regular purse or backpack?
Check the published dimensions and prohibited-item list before leaving your hotel. The word “small” is not a measurement, and the clear-bag rule does not override the backpack prohibition.
What should chapter organizers send their members?
A short message with the official event links, ticket responsibilities, meeting location, transportation plan and a contact person. Share access needs privately with the relevant organizer rather than in a public group thread.
Bring the pride. Keep the plan simple.
Homecoming does not need an overpacked itinerary to be memorable. Protect time for the conversations, photographs and reunions you actually want. Confirm the essentials now, then leave room for the people.
