Maryland State Senator Angela Alsobrooks, who is also a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., was honored as Citizen of the Year by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. at their 2025 International Leadership Conference in Detroit, Michigan.
The award, presented by Omega Psi Phi’s Lambda Gamma Gamma chapter and elevated across the fraternity’s districts, recognizes Alsobrooks’ exemplary leadership, consistent public service, and ongoing advocacy for justice, equity, and community empowerment.
As the first African American woman elected to represent her district in the Maryland Senate, Alsobrooks has championed legislation addressing economic opportunity, educational equity, criminal justice reform, and underserved communities. Her rise in politics is marked by a deep commitment to uplifting those often left behind.
Receiving the award, Senator Alsobrooks expressed deep gratitude, noting how each step — from local recognition to international honor — carries profound meaning in a movement that values community, mentorship, and servant leadership. She acknowledged the honor as “humbling,” emphasizing that the recognition is not only for her but for all who continue to work on behalf of others.
This recognition at Omega’s conference brought together fraternity leaders, elected officials, and activists, reinforcing that civic engagement, Greek organizations, and public leadership are deeply intertwined in shaping communities. Through her honor, Alsobrooks highlights how Black women in Greek life often lead with both policy and purpose.
