Opal Lee: “Grandmother of Juneteenth” & Zeta Phi Beta Soror

Opal Lee is celebrated as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth” and holds a cherished place in Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Inc. Her lifelong activism and resolute spirit shaped the journey to recognition for Juneteenth across the nation.

Born in Texas, Lee grew up bearing the legacy of Black resilience. Over the years, she made it her mission to shine a light on Juneteenth — the day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States — as more than a regional remembrance but as a national observance.

At age 89, Lee embarked on a symbolic march from Fort Worth, Texas toward Washington, D.C., to press for national recognition of Juneteenth. She believed that her journey — and her presence — would demand attention and accountability.

In 2021, her efforts came to fruition when Juneteenth was officially declared a federal holiday. Lee, then in her 90s, was honored in ceremonial capacities as the nation recognized the cause she had long championed.

Within the Zeta community, her work was celebrated by chapters nationwide, honoring her as a sister whose activism embodies the spirit of service, justice, and cultural memory. Her example continues to inspire future generations to see Juneteenth not merely as a date, but as an ongoing movement toward freedom and recognition.
