Brotherhood in Action: A Sigma Gives a Kidney to His Line Brother

Brian Taylor and Larry Sutton pledged Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity together in the fall of 1982. Over 40 years later, their brotherhood would be tested — and affirmed — in an extraordinary way.

After years on dialysis and a long wait for a donor, Larry Sutton’s health was faltering. Brian Taylor, moved by faith, love, and memory of his late brother who died of kidney failure, stepped forward. The two underwent a successful kidney transplant together on June 2, 2025, at NorthShore University Hospital.

Taylor reflected on the emotional gravity of the moment: “Words don’t express the love I have for him. When someone does this for you, you feel indebted for your life.” To him, the decision was rooted in a lifetime of shared history — the streets of Bed-Stuy, Sigma service, and the promise of brotherhood.

The act is more than a medical gift — it’s a lived affirmation of what pledging a fraternity means at its core: standing for one another, in health and hardship.

As Sigma brothers across the country celebrate this story of sacrifice and solidarity, it reminds us that true brotherhood is measured not by ceremony, but by how we lift each other when it matters most.
