Fred Hammond: Gospel Icon & Honorary Sigma Brother
Share
Fred Hammond stands among gospel music’s most influential voices—and now, he also holds the distinction of being an Honorary Brother of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc.
With a career spanning over four decades, Hammond helped transform urban gospel by merging traditional worship with contemporary rhythms and R&B influence. From his early days with the group Commissioned to his solo work, he produced landmark albums that resonated deeply in Black faith communities.
Beyond the studio, Hammond’s impact has extended into mentorship, outreach and service: youth music programs, faith-based leadership initiatives and community efforts rooted in Black uplift and cultural relevance.
When Phi Beta Sigma honored Hammond during their 2025 International Conclave, the fraternity recognized not only his artistic mastery—but also his alignment with the Sigma pillars of Brotherhood, Scholarship and Service.
Hammond’s induction into the Sigma brotherhood positions him as more than an artist—he’s now a part of a legacy that situates culture for service, and service for humanity.
